The Most Underrated National Park

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Glacier National Park

As a lover of our country’s wonderful inventory of National Parks, I, like most of you who are reading this, have my opinions on which parks deserve to be considered among the top tier of parks within our countries unbelievable collection.  I think of the national parks much as I do puppies; I never met a single one I didn’t like, but I still have preferences and favorites.

While most put the likes of Yosemite, Yellowstone, and the Grand Canyon among a small group at the very top, one that often gets left out is Glacier National Park (NP).  This writer believes this park is fully deserving of membership in this small fraternity of the grandest of our prized parks.

To begin with, there are very few parks where you are nearly guaranteed to see grizzly bear.  There is only a couple where you can count on seeing an endangered glacier.  Glacier NP may be the only, (it is certainly the best), place to see both.

Additional, one of my favorite experiences when visiting one of our great western national parks is overnighting, or at least enjoying a meal, at a grand and historic lodge.  These often massive and always historic lodges are one of the fortunate attributes and selling points for a select few parks.  A national park is lucky if it has one, Grand Canyon NP has two (one on each rim which in many ways are like two distinct parks), but Glacier NP has four, five if you include the Prince of Wales Hotel in Canada’s adjacent Waterton International Peace Park.  Together the two parks operate as Waterton – Glacier International Peace Park World Heritage Site.  The great lodges at Glacier NP are for the most part, unbelievably massive, built with hundreds of lodging rooms, designed around high vaulted ceiling central common areas, and sit aside deep clear mountain lakes.  These tremendously tidy, continually renovated, and gorgeous options for food and overnight stay have preserved the charm that has been lost to modern architecture and the reality of today’s high building costs.  They were all built nearly a decade ago (1920 – 1927) and were, for the most part, the brainchild of the great railroads to drive their business by giving vacationers an excuse and a practical way to experience the great western parks.

Glacier NP offers unsurpassed hiking, large, clear, and very chilly mountain lakes, and memorable wildlife encounters.  A word of warning here.  This is not a park to just take off and hike alone and without any planning.  There is a large population of grizzly bear in this park.  I have hiked most every western national park, and I have seen both black and grizzly bear in numerous parks, but there is no park where their numbers are so plentiful.  In fact, where many parks like Yosemite, Yellowstone, and Kings Canyon  (among others) will tell you via brochures and park rangers that you are in bear country, Glacier NP is the only park where I have experienced large red signs stating that you are in BEAR COUNTRY at every trailhead.  The smart plan is to get advice from a park ranger on how to react if you do encounter bear, wear a “bear bell” and make lots of noise while hiking, and NEVER hike alone or with small children.  If you heed this advice, you can experience some of the most memorable hiking of your life without any problems. I challenge anyone to deny this park its rightful place among the elite few parks that comprise the very best our fabulous national park system has to offer.

Visiting Idaho on Your Next Road Trip

The Sawtooth mountain Range and the main Salmo...
Image via Wikipedia

Idaho campgrounds are oftentimes overlooked for the big sky country of Montana to the east or the Pacific shores in Washington to the west, Idaho offers as many outdoor options as any other state in the Northwest. But with the mix of fun and nostalgic things to do, surprising Idaho RV camping resorts and pleasant Idaho campgrounds, you’re sure to find your stay in Idaho to be worth the stop.

Idaho’s panhandle affords dramatic vistas and as much room to explore as any other region in the country. At the northernmost point of the American Rockies, start at the Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge. This vast 2,774-acre expanse is awesome, featuring plenty of western wildlife including elk, moose, and bear. Birders won’t suffer for lack of things to look at as plenty of species roost here as well.

Priest Lake is just west of here, a remote body of water with all the trappings (sans the people) of more popular lakes. The lake is lined with quaint sand beaches giving way to rock formations and ultimately the lush forest that dominates the area. Looking for a day trip? How does an afternoon spent rafting or canoeing along Priest River sound? Otherwise, grab your boots and take a hike along miles of hiking trails.

Central Idaho offers its visitors some of the most confusing and complex landscapes in all of North America. The Salmon River anchors the area as it passes into the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Encompassing more than 1,200 square miles, the Sawtooth N.R.A. is highlighted by its virtual namesake; impressive jagged granite peaks running through the center of the park. Four small mountain ranges converge in this park: The Smoky Mountains, the Boulder Mountains, the Sawtooth Range, and the White Cloud Peaks. With these mountains, interspersed with wildflower-covered meadows, Sawtooth is prime hiking country.

Central Idaho is also home to America’s largest designated wilderness. At 2.3 million acres, the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness offers adventurers weeks’ worth of activities. The name is as dramatic as the park is splendid. The pinnacle of outdoor pursuits is the whitewater rafting. This area is home to three of the nation’s finest rivers for that pastime: The Salmon, the Middle Fork Salmon, and the Selway. But for those who tend to shy away from those rigorous activities, the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness is worth the trip for the scenery alone – not whitecaps necessarily.  Impressive valleys are cut by roaring rivers, alpine forests scramble up slopes, and some of the most elusive animals in the United States occasionally drop in as well; mountain lions, bobcats, bears and mountain goats, for starters.  For the sportier animal enthusiast, the Wilderness’ mighty river gives way to smaller creeks loaded with cutthroat, rainbow, and brook trout.

Iguazu Falls

This monumental geographic feature is located in the Iguazu National Park, north of the province of Misiones, Argentine coast. Its discovery dates back to 1541, while 25 years ago was declared Natural Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO. Thus, the emblematic Iguazu Falls are one of the major tourist attractions in Latin America.

When standing in front of such an event, tourists generally agree vertigo, adrenaline, and it causes glare. The closeness of the triple border between Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay share the falls makes his jumps with Brazilian lands. Here comes the river, after crossing a plateau of approximately 1,200 kilometers, is unexpectedly with the monstrous Garganta del Diablo, a stunning drop of 80 meters. That landscape, wonderful, visually shocking, is probably the quintessential postcard of this magnificent creation of nature.

Niagara Falls have around 300 jumps between islets and cliffs, while the tour of the place can be done in two ways: on foot or in a nice train that runs on gas. Also there are two circuits. Through access to the lower base of the falls, where violence giant reflected in a kind of dew that visitors feel good about. Meanwhile, the upper is highlighted by the calm and serenity, and is a ideal place for joy and admiration of the phenomenon. This stage is perfect for enjoying the panoramic views and take photographs.

From the balcony of that Garganta del Diablo, which forms the largest waterfall in the accident, the show is really touching. Perhaps in that moment of pleasure can understand why the majestic Iguazu Falls are constantly chosen and re-elected by tourism worldwide.

Manolo Blahnik – Deep Sea Fishing On the Mississippi Gulf Coast – couple hugging at beach

Deep sea fishing from a boat in the Gulf of Mexico
Image via Wikipedia

If you are interested in a fun waterbourne adventure, you should consider a deep sea fishing trip on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. From bluewater trips in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico to light tackle excursions along the coastline in the Mississippi Sound, deep sea fishing charters provide bottom fishing trips and trolling excursions throughout the year, routinely returning to port with a variety of fish, including sharks, grouper, jack, snapper, lemon-fish and King and the smaller Spanish mackerel. Additionally, many other types of game fish are regularly caught. As a courtesy, your catch can be cleaned and dressed upon request for a standard charge, however you may opt to complete this task yourself .

Charter boats are located in several harbors along the coast. Pass Christian, Gulfport, Biloxi, Long couple hugging at beach , and Ocean Springs each house several charter boats, as well as offering fresh caught gulf shrimp, oysters, fish, and other seafood for sale fresh out of the water.

A full day fishing charter customarily runs for up to eight hours with varying departure times. Most charters depart early, at 6:00- 7:00a.m. Those wishing for longer or shorter adventures might consider the overnight and 1/2 day trips. The trips are usually comprised of four to six people with standard pricing for a full day beginning at around $400.00; 1/2 day trips are priced starting at $285.00 and allow for up to six passengers although prices may vary depending on the season. Ice, bait and tackle will be provided for your convenience.

All of the fish you will be catching will definitely make for hungry fishermen. The party chartering the boat usually is required to provide food and beverages for itself as well as the captain and the crew, but special arrangements are available in advance with most captains, for an additional fee, to supply the food and refreshments if requested.

Generally, the charter boat captains have no restrictive guidelines for the consumption of alcohol on their vessels as long as local laws are followed, yet for the safety of you and others in your party, excessive consumption and alcohol abuse is not tolerated.

Make sure proper dress is worn for your deep sea fishing trip. It is recommended that soft deck Manolo Blahnik be worn. Head coverings, such as caps and hats, proper protective sunglasses and adequate sunscreen are essential. During the spring, fall and winter, make a point to wear warm enough clothing to provide protection from cool winds that may blow in off of the open waters. During the summer months, clothing that provides protection from the sun is needed and a liberal amount of sunscreen should be applied to anyone that will be exposed to the sun for extended periods of time while trying to hook the big one.

To avoid a scheduling disappointment, especially for seasonal holiday or weekend trips, charters should be reserved well in advance, although reservations that are made an evening before may be a sufficient amount of time for booking weekday trips.

A Mississippi saltwater fishing license is required to fish in the state waters. One must be obtained prior to the trip, unless notification has been made beforehand that the license is covered by the charter boat. Make sure to confirm when booking your charter.

Whatever type or length of trip, experiencing the wonders and creatures of the Mississippi Sound and the Gulf of Mexico will provide lasting memories and fishing stories.

Taking the Queue Out of Cuba

It’s a funny thing isn’t it? You discover the most idyllic, secret, fascinating or unusual place in the world but unfortunately you are not usually alone! We all want to find the latest ‘undiscovered paradise’, but the truth of the matter is that in today’s age of accessible travel, the world is a much smaller place and the secret places are becoming fewer and fewer. But take heart, on a Cuba holiday it’s possible to get creative and with a little effort and a whisper in a few ears, you can still find some unusual things to do off the beaten track. Why not hire yourself an old Cuban car and hit the highway for a road trip with a difference?

Camaguey

rSituated in the middle of Cuba, Camaguey has all the charm of Old Town Havana without the crowds. Colonial architecture lines the streets and although it’s not as picture-postcard perfect as some of the better known towns you may see on your Cuba holiday, its faded, 1950’s, tumbleweed exterior is an intrinsic part of its charm. It really is the authentic Cuban lifestyle on display. The locals are friendly in a curious kind of way and will be happy to engage in a bit of banter over a plate of the Cuban staple, beans and rice. If you feel a sudden romantic urge wash over you in Camaguey, you’re definitely in the right place! The Wedding Palace is Camaguey’s answer to Las Vegas and is a veritable marriage factory. All day long, loved-up Cubans file in the back door, change into suits and dresses supplied by the venue, and get driven around the block in a beaten-up car to arrive in style to the fanfare of the wedding march through tinny, rusty speakers. Guests are welcome so go along and sneak into some photos for an unusual souvenir from your Cuba holiday!

The Napoleon Museum of Havana

What, you may ask, is a museum dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte doing popping up in an article about a Cuba holiday? Not one of the city’s better known museums, it is nevertheless well worth a visit if you’re more into culture than crowds. It seems that a former prominent Cuban businessman was an avid collector of memorabilia of the famous emperor and amassed one of the most important collections in the world. When the businessman left Cuba during the revolution, he donated the collection to the government and the museum was established. Hundreds of fascinating relics like guns, telescopes, portraits, books, his famous funeral mask and even a toothbrush can be found in the museum. It is a wonderful insight into his life and its unusual geographic setting adds to the experience. The building itself is a wonderful Florentine style palace and its imposing facade belies the treasure trove inside.

El Guinol Nacional (Havana Children’s Puppet Theatre)

For a truly warm and genuine Cuban experience El Guinol Nacional (the Havana Children’s Puppet Theatre) is a delightful escape. A popular attraction for the local youth of Havana, the puppet theatre was established in 1963 in an old cinema of the Focsa building, which is the largest (and possibly the most unusual looking) building in Havana. The best local actors, writers and craftsmen collaborate to produce a non-stop succession of plays and sketches based on classical children’s literature. The puppets, dummies and clowns, which are the stars of the shows, are an eclectic assortment of traditional and modern design. It is a wonderfully different place to visit on your Cuba holiday and for a little bit of adult fun you can stay for a comedy show on a Tuesday evening.

How Pearl Harbor Has Changed Over the Past 20 Years

Pearl Harbor is best known for the 1941 Japanese bombing that prompted the United States to enter World War II. The US naval base located on Oahu Island, Hawaii, has many memorials and museum dedicated to the infamous events of Sunday, December 7, 1941. The most popular attractions in Pearl Harbor are the memorial of the USS Arizona and the outdoor museum called the Polynesian Cultural Center. Admission to the memorial is free and any soldier who served on the Arizona can have his ashes scattered above the shipwreck site. In the last 20 years, the island has erected more memorials to honor its rich history and significantly increased its profile as an education and entertainment vacation destination.

In December 2006, the Pacific Aviation Museum, located on historic Ford Island, opened Hangar 37 to the public. Hangar 37 focuses on the Pearl Harbor attack with interactive displays of the Battle of Guadalcanal and Jimmy Doolittle’s Tokyo bomber raid. Other hangars at the museum will focus on the Vietnam War, Korean War, and Cold War. The museum also plays host to several air shows. Scheduled for opening in 2010 or 2011, Hangar 79, will offer interactive displays and vintage aircrafts will educate the public on the major theatres of WWII including the Philippines and China. A full-size replica of a WWII aircraft carrier will also be featured inside the hangar. The museum has a flight simulator where visitors can experience the thrill of combat flying in a Wildcat or Zero aircraft.

Additionally, the island has 18 markers dedicated to battleships sunk during the Pearl Harbor attack. The Admiral Clarey Bridge, built in 1998, connects Ford Island to mainland of Oahu. Before the bridge was constructed Ford Island could only be reached by ferry and the island was closed to the public. Only tourists who possessed a military identification or had been invited by a military family could access the island.

rAnother Pearl Harbor historic site is the battleship USS Missouri. Moved from the US in 1999,the USS Missouri, nicknamed “Mighty Mo”, it now sits perpendicular to the sunken USS Arizona representing both the beginning and the end of the United States’ participation in the war The USS Missouri is famous because the Japanese signed the surrender papers aboard ship signifying the end of WWII. The ship’s location signifies its protection of the USS Arizona.

While surfers may travel to Waikiki beach for the awesome waves, the beach also offers a history lesson to tourists. In 1994, native Hawaiian historian George Kanahele penned a paper describing 10 ways to improve Waikiki Beach. One of Kanahele’s suggestions was the creation of the Waikiki Historic Trail and in 1997 he founded the Native Hawaiian Tourism and Hospitality Association to further his goals of restoring Hawaiian culture on the island. Kanahele suggested that the historic trail highlight significant events and locations in Hawaiian history. Although he passed before all of the historic markers could be placed on the trail, today 19 surfboard markers highlight historical sites along the beach.
